The Appel Fellowship provides Claremont Mckenna College first-year students with a budget for international projects to support purposeful, independent experiences that culminate in a meaningful writing project. This Fellowship is meant to enhance the first-year experience by encouraging students to engage in independent writing projects that have the potential to be life-transforming. The ultimate goals of the Appel fellowship are to give students an opportunity to experience writing in a way that may shape the course of their lives in new and exciting ways and encourage students to share these experiences with others by crafting a written project.
I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Gabriel Gluskin-Braun who chose to do his writing piece on skateparks across the Western half of the United States of America. Together, we drove a circus from Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, California, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and then back to Illinois. My part of this project was mainly photographing all the skateparks we went to and capturing the differences between them all. I was really there to support his words he has created in a more visual way.
